Exploring Boat Canvas Options

by Jeff Almas

Choosing the appropriate boat canvas for your boat is a choice that should be considered carefully. Your boat can turn into a very frustrating and annoying thing if you do not correctly design and/or choose the right type of boat canvas for your boat. There are so many different fabrics and also a lot of different designs to consider when making this expensive decision.

We will always give you multiple ideas to think of and also talk to you about your ideal boat canvas type and design so that we can make sure that you have the best look, most durability, and the easiest operation possible. Do not just take the word of any canvas man and certainly beware of the cheap imitations that have very limited knowledge.

It is important that you hire an expert so that you can get all the answers you need. There are a lot of choices to make and you certainly do not want to make a decision that will make your boat canvas a disappointment.

The type of material that should be chosen is the key. Most of the canvas out there is Sunbrella which is a very nice fabric that is lightweight and also breathable. Lots of Sunbrella boat canvas is out there but there is also a Sunbrella boat canvas called Seamark Sunbrella which is Sunbrella with a vinyl backing on it.  and it not only makes a more durable boat canvas it also gives you a nice look with a complimented color difference on the underside of the canvas. You should avoid using Seamark Sunbrella on any other parts of your canvas like side curtains, or clear vinyl windshields etc. because they are heavier and they do not breathe like they should. If you use it for a boat canvas cover you can vent it but it is a more expensive boat canvas and unnecessary to use on a full boat cover. There is also some less expensive options which also work for boat canvas and one of those names is Aqualon.

Aqualon is a decent fabric and is used a lot on pontoon boats for large covers and also some enclosures. It is an option that is used to get the results you want but not kill the pocketbook in the meantime. It will not last as long or look as good as the other options but it is a decent alternative. There are also canvas like Top Gun, Harbortime, Naugahyde, Stamoid, and many others

Let’s also talk about the type of clear vinyl options or glass options some people may call it. You have 10, 20, 30, and even 40 gauge clear vinyls, which some of this may even be double polished or extruded for extra clarity. You also have 30, 40 and even up to 60 gauge StrataGlass. This glass is more scratch resistant and also will not discolor as fast.

Strata is quite a bit more expensive but it is an excellent choice for clarity and quality in clear vinyl choices. You can also get these glasses tinted for some nice applications.

Well as you can see there are a lot of options to consider and this truly is the tip of the iceberg for boat canvas. There are so many different fabrics and clear vinyl’s that you really need to think carefully and discuss your options for the best boat canvas design and look that you deserve. Call us and see.
